Read Matthew 28:16-20 in as many versions as you have available.
1. We call this passage (Matthew 28:16-20) the Great Commission, why?
2. Where does this encounter with Jesus take place?
3. Since it is neither the Risen Lord’s first encounter nor final words why do we call it the Great commission?
4. Who is it that Jesus is talking to? What do we know about them?
5. Who doubted and who worshiped Jesus according to verse 17?
6. What is “all authority” (18). And Who has it and Who gave it? (Greek Word – exousia)
7. What did Jesus do with this authority? (19) (Eph. 3:20-21; Rom. 8:11)
8. Do all disciples need to be baptized? (19) (1Cor. 12:13; 1 Pet. 3:21; Acts 10:48;22:16; Gal. 3:27; Luke 3:16; Mark 16:16; Luke 3:21-22) What about the thief on the cross? (Luke 23:43).
9. Who did Jesus say to both make disciples for and to Baptize them in the name of? (19) (See also Acts 8:16, 19:5, Rom. 6:3, 1 Cor. 1:13, 10:2; Gal 3:27).
10. Was this commission of Jesus just for those present or does it continue to disciples today? 11. Are you truly a disciple of Christ? What three things from this passage does Jesus say disciples do?
12. Where did Jesus promise to be while you are fulfilling your commission? (Matthew 28:20) (see also Mark 16:20; Isa 41:10; Jn. 14:18-23; Acts 18:9-10; 2Tim 4:17).
